Description

redondeadaCounting on  highly competitive agriculture based on the nispero fruit, introduced in Spain in the XIX century by the Callosa citizen Juan Bautista Berenguer.  The fruit farmers are associated with a co-operative which commercialises the fruit, destined, mainly, for exportation; its principal destinations are France and Italy.  The Agricultural Co-operative sends more than 50% of the nisperos to the exterior and the other half are sold in the interior.

Artisans

Products made from the nispero fruit.  “Alpargatas” Traditional country sandals. Goat’s cheese.  Honey

Gastronomy

‘Arroz con costra’ (rice with a crust), typical in Carnival season. It is a dry rice dish which contains, amongst other indgredients, cold meats, covered in beaten egg and cooked in the oven in an eartheqare dish.

Minxos.  This is a type of pastie with pieces of vegetable and fish.

Puchero de pelotas.  A typical dish in the local Moors and Christians (Moros y Cristianos) Fiestas, a stew that includes meatballs wrapped in cabbage leaves.

Desserts:  Amongst the typical Callos desserts is the outstanding “Patissets d’Aiguardent i a l’Aire” , “almendrados”, “Rollitos de anis”, traditional desserts during the fiestas and Christmas.



Fiestas

Romeria de San Jaime.  The 25th of July the fiestas of “Sant Jaume” are celebrated, possibly the oldest festival in Callosa, dating from 1819.  Of profanic origin it is outstanding for its “danses” (dances), of great popular participation.

Moors and Christains (Moros y Cristianos).  As a town with respected historic origins this Fiesta has been celebrated since 1860 during the second week of October and are the most popular fiestas.  ‘Moros y Cristianos’ were declared of national interest in 1985.  They are celebrated in honour of the Virgin de las Injurias and they start with the ‘dolcaines y tabaletas’ (traditional instruments, reed type flute and drums).  Amongst the most spectacular acts are the colourful parades of the ‘Entrada Mora y Entrada Cristiano’ (entrance of the Moors and Christians, preceded by the ancient dances of the ‘Pastoretes’, who accompany the Virgin during the procession.

The dance of the “Nanos” goes before each parade and represents the pagan part of the festival.

Monuments

The Castle of Bernia  (Castillo de Bernia), situated in the Sierra de Bernia mountain and declared patrimony of cultural interest.

El Poador. The visitor, after exploring the old town, formed with the typical mediterranean village building, can visit el ‘poeador’, where the local women used to go to wash clothes and fill their water jugs to take home.

The Church Arciprestal de San Juan Bautista.  This was constructed halway through the XVIII century by a pretigious classic Valencian architect Antonio Gilabert i Fornes (1716 – 1792). It is, therefore, one of the churches representing the transition period  from Baroque to the Neo-classicism.  It has an organ which dated from the XVIII century.

Murall del Castillo (Castle Wall).  Some of the ruins are still exist of the original wall from the castle.  It is believed that Bernat de Sarria built it.  A succession of town nobles lived in the castle until its disappearance in XVIII century.



Museums

The Ethnic and Achitecural Museum (Calle Jaume Roig s/n).  The exposition present a linear route, structured in four themed atmospheres:  infancy (the school and children’s games), the countryside, the traditional professions (shepherds, bee keeping, cobblers, etc.) and the traditional Callos house, all of these with viewable utensils and panels explaining their use.

Water Museum (Museo del Agua) (Pa Fonts de l’Algar) next to the camping.  The musueum shows the economic, ecological and cultural value of the water throughout history.  It is divided into four different atmospheric themes.  Water as a vital resource and how it has geographically modelled the terrain.  Hydraulic history (aqueducts and Roman baths, Arabian baths, Arabian irrigatrin systems, etc.).  The ethnic use of water, wahsing, mills, dams, snow pits, etc.  Modern use of water, the hydroelectrics, water purifiers, modern irrigation systems, etc.



Scenery

The waterfalls of the river Algar, with are a touristically conditioned complex well worth visiting.  El Calvario. Fort of Bernia and the village washing place.
