Principal Activity
A town totally dedicated to tourism as a complementary offer to the ‘sun and beaches’ of the coast of Benidorm, Altea, etc., and as a place of great residential areas. Not in vain is it found in the middle of the touristic route which go to the Waterfalls of Algar in Callosa d’en Sarria and also to Guadalest. It conservespart of its traditional agriculture including almonds, citric fruits, olives, nisperos and some orchards.
Description
The siluette of the mountain Ponoch or Ponoig (1181 m), “el Leon dormido” (the sleeping lion) of Gabriel Miro and the profile of the town with the tower of the church of San Pedro, and the ancient cemetery, mark the visual attraction of this town. Recreated by Gabriel Miro in his books, he had his summer house here the House of Siguenza, situated at the strt of the road that leads to Guadalest. Two other famous residents were Oscar Espla and Benjamin Palencia, whose workshop is still conserved. In the famous Fon del Xorrets, 221 taps offer water to the surprised visitors. The best urban route is the one that starts from here and reaches the closed cementery called by Gabriel Miro ‘the orchard of crosses’ which crowns the urban area. Polop still conserves the the typical look of white and blue villages of the Alicante coast.
